What’s an expanded power of attorney and why is it so important?
A traditional financial power of attorney, they are also oftentimes called a durable power of attorney. It is legal authority for your agents, somebody named to act on your behalf to be able to handle your financial matters for you. A traditional power of attorney, allows somebody to pay your bills, to operate on your behalf with respect to my finances. But when it comes to the elder care journey and elder law issues and long-term care planning, we often times need more than just the ability to pay bills and the ability to get financial records. We need an expanded ability that includes the ability to reshuffle the financial deck, to reposition assets to potentially put trust in place to move things around financially. And a traditional power of attorney is not going to be robust enough and not going to give the agent enough authority typically to do the type of planning that we need to do in elder law situations. So an expanded power of attorney, as we call it, I would say is the single most critical document that we really need to get in place for most folks.
