Will Medicaid take my home if I need nursing home care?
Without proper planning that is a very real risk. It happens to thousands of people initially when you apply for Medicaid to pay for your nursing home care, the house will be exempt. If you fill out the application properly and climb the exemption properly, the home will be exempt, the primary residence will be exempt. However when you pass away, estate will have a claim against the house. If you’ve been on Medicaid the claim that the state will have will be up to whatever the state has spent on your care. With the proper planning in place can make sure that the house is protected, and that it’s ultimately going to be passed on to our kids. So you don’t have to risk your house but without planning, most people’s house is at risk.
