At what age should I consider seeking an elder law attorney?
You know, in general, the earlier in the process that you plan, the better your options will be. So some folks wait to see us until there’s crisis on their hands. And for a lot of those folks, they may have assumed that it might be too late to do anything, but let’s just go check with the attorney and see, or maybe the kids came to see us and say here’s mom and dad’s situation, one of them needs care right now, we don’t know if there’s anything we can do. And usually it’s not too late to help. However, had those same clients came to see us earlier in the process, say in their 60s or 70s are still waiting until they’re 80s or 90s when there’s crisis on their hands. Most of them would have better options the earlier they start planning. So if you can… if you’re approaching retirement, it’s a great time to come see an elder law attorney and get a plan and place that’s tailored to your specific situation. That said don’t ever assume that it’s too late. A lot of folks come to see us but after they already have their loved one in the nursing home. Don’t assume that just because somebody’s already at that stage of the process that it’s already too late.
