Apple Cake Recipe (A French Classic)

By: Jennifer Segal

Total Time: 1 hour
Servings: 8

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 pounds apples (such as Granny Smith or Honey Crisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade dough)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour (if using). Let sit for 10 minutes to draw out the juices.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust. Dot with butter.
  4. Cover with the second pie crust, crimp edges to seal, and make a few slits on top to allow steam to escape.
  5. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and juices are bubbling.
  6. Cool for at least 2 hours before serving. Optionally, serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Enjoy a delicious slice of warm, spiced apple pie!
