Show notes

In this episode of Second Half Conversations, we explore one of the biggest transitions many families experience but rarely prepare for:

What happens to your role, your relationships, and your sense of self when the last child walks out the door?
Sondra Ziegler is joined by Kate Hamilton, author of The Imperfect Parent: A Nonjudgmental Guide to Raising Children in the Modern World, for the first half of an honest conversation about parenting adult children, breaking the patterns we inherited, and figuring out who we are once the daily work of raising a family is behind us.

Kate shares the story behind her book: a mother-in-law who sat her down early in her marriage and walked her through how she raised her son, the good, the bad, and the ugly, along with the reasoning behind it all. That transparency became the model for the book she eventually wrote. From there she walks through her car ride analogy for parenting, where you start out driving with your child buckled in behind you and eventually find yourself advising from the third row of a car they own and drive themselves.

Then it gets personal. Sondra shares the season when her youngest left for college and she and her husband sold the family home in the same stretch of months, and the six months she spent grieving both. Kate speaks to the identity question underneath it: you are still a parent, but the role has changed shape, and the interests and talents you set aside for eighteen years are still there waiting. She also describes how differently the shift can land for each parent, from her husband feeling shut out when the boys were babies to becoming the one their son now turns to about his new business.
